INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

BULLETIN!

Ø      The International Code Council (ICC) at is July 19, 2008 meeting approved the creation of Sustainable Building Technology Committee (SBTC) to support its many ongoing efforts in green, sustainable and safe construction.

Ø      The ICC announces in April 2009 its intent to initiate a “Green Building Code Development Project” targeted at the commercial market.  The objective of this project is to develop a Green Building Code for traditional and high-performance buildings that is consistent and coordinated with the ICC family of Codes and Standards.

Ø      In 2007, the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) and the International Code Council (ICC) partnered to form a national consensus committee that resulted in the ANSI approved ICC-700-2008 National Green Building Standard (NGBS), for residential and multifamily homes.

Ø      The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) make the final push toward their shared goal of increasing the energy efficiency of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2010 by 30% over Standard 90.1-2004.

Ø      The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) confirmed that numbers of both LEED-registered and LEED-certified projects doubled in 2008 – from about 10,000 registered projects at the end of 2007 up to more than 20,000 by the end of January 2009, while square footage of LEED-certified construction rose 92% from 148 million to 284 million square feet.

Ø      Most government buildings are being mandated to meet the USGBC, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver rating standards.

Doug Setter, LEED-AP and co-developer of Austin, Texas, Green Builder Program, former State Coordinator for Built Green Colorado, and currently with the U.S. Department of Energy said “Anyone who thinks that the emphasis on building energy efficiency will diminish any time in the foreseeable future is certain to be disappointed.  There is every reason to look forward to a rapidly approaching new normal when high-performance buildings are not the exception but the rule.”
